- We know that we are of God, and the whole world is in the power of the evil one.
1 John 5:19 -
o that there may be no confusion,
I shall set forth more clearly what I mean when I speak about this war. Since the
beginning of time there have been two kingdoms, or two cities of which man may be a
citizen. These two cities are eternally and totally opposed to one another and the war
I speak of is the struggle between them. The first city is what St. Augustine called
the City of God. The second is the City of man. The bible refers to these two entities
as well but it speaks of them as kingdoms. The kingdom of God, or heaven, and the kingdom
of Satan, or of this world.
These two cities are more than just the people who are part of them. They are built on ideas,
philosophies, and beliefs. They are in essence religious worldviews. The City of Man is
so called because it makes man the center of its philosophies, and of its religion. Man is,
however, not the ruler of this city. In reality he is its slave. The true ruler of this city
is shown in scripture to be the evil one, the enemy, Satan, the devil, whatever name you prefer.
The true character of the City of Man is the character of its ruler. Its foundation is built
upon lies, deception, pride, and sin. Its ultimate goal is complete domination. The City of Man
is intent upon ruling this earth and destroying everything and everyone who stands in its way.
